Dear Summerset Resident:
Effective January 1, 2008, the city requires licensing of your family pet. Conditions of the ordinance are as follows:
12-2-1 LICENSING DOGS
Every household within the corporate limits of the City owning or possessing a dog of the age of six moths or more shall pay the city Finance Officer an annual license fee in the sum of $10.00 for any neutered or spayed dog or $20.00 intact dog. Any household with more than one dog shall pay the City Finance Officer annually, $10 for each neutered or spayed dog or $20.00 intact dog. Such annual license fees shall be paid on or before the first day of January of each year, and the City Finance Officer shall, upon payment and upon sufficient proof of the required rabies vaccination issue the owner thereof a license tag. Such a license tags shall be immediately attached to such dog by means of a collar or other reasonable permanent method. The purpose of this statute is to ensure the health and safety of the citizens. A fine of $25.00 per dog shall be imposed for failure to license each dog by the last day of January each year. New residents to the city after the last day of January are exempt from the fine of the current calendar year if license is obtained within 90 days of beginning residence. This does not include the licensing of dangerous dogs, see chapter 12-9.
12-2-2 CONDITIONS FOR A DOG LICENSE
As a condition to the issuance of a dog license, the person making such application shall furnish a certificate from a licensed veterinarian that the dog sought to be licensed has been vaccinated for and made immune to rabies for the entire current license year.
12-3-6 LICENSING CATS
Every household within the corporate limits of the City owning or possessing a cat of the age of six (6) months or more shall pay the City Finance Officer an annual license fee in the sum of ten dollars ($10.00) unless such feline is indoor only and not free roaming. Such annual license fees shall be paid on or before the last day of January of each year, and a license shall be issued upon sufficient proof to the Finance Officer that said animal has been properly vaccinated for rabies.
The City Office will begin accepting applications and issuing licenses after January 1st. The office is open from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Please be sure to bring proof of your pet’s rabies vaccination.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. The fees collected will help alleviate the administrative and supply costs of this program and will also help with funding the city law enforcement department in finding your missing dogs or cats if that unfortunate situation should arise.
